I am writing this essay with the hope that it can help someone who is interested in obtaing a driver's licence and want information on how to do it.
A) My motivation. When I just arrived in Korea I didn't have the motivation to learn how to drive because of several reasons. First it's too expensive to learn and I don't know much Korean that I can't understand the classes. Another reason is that public transportation is very convenient, I can easily go to places for sight seeing or go visit my friends nearby. However after getting pregnant with my first child I realized the necessity of learning how to drive. Below are links to help you have an idea on the steps you need to take. For me I observed my husband everytime he drove and I asked many question about the parts of the car and the functions. I also asked about meaning of the symbols that we passed by and I asked about traffic rules and regulations and what are the penalties and what to do in certain driving situations like" What should I do when the light turns yellow as I approach the crossing?". It turns out it's a very smart question beacause it was one of the questions in the written test. The answer is slow down and stop, it's always better to chose the safe thing to do rather than drive fast before the signal turns red. 1) Decide whether to enroll in a driving institute or learn privately. These days it will cost between 650,000won to 800,000 to enroll in an institute. Often these would include all the payments for the documents you need. But not all institutes include this in the rates, in others you have to pay separately for the documents you'll need. Learning privately is much cheaper, but it also means you will have to do all the processing of documents by yourself. It is less convenient than using an institute.These days there are programs in multicultural centers that provide assistance to multicultural families who want to get a drivers' licence. It will be wise to take advantage of these programs, call the center nearest to you and ask for more information about this. The first test you have to take is the written test, you can choose what language you want to use to take the test. You'll have to learn the traffic signs and symbols, traffic laws and corresponding penalties, you'll need at least 70 points to pass. The second will be the simulation, you'll have to learn and know the basic parts of the car and the functions and pass the simulation test, 80 points is the passing score. And the last test is the driving test on the road, you have to finish the minimum hours of practice required before you can take this test, the passing score is 70 points. Do not lose hope when you fail a test you can easily have a retake later after you review. The most nerve wrecking test will be the road test. For me I was so nervous and I was shaking, so before the test I took deep breaths and secretly chewed gum. It will be good for you if you think of ways to be less nervous so that you will not commit mistakes you normally won't make if you were calm. C) Advantages of having a driver's licence. We all know driving will give us the advantage of mobility. I can go from one place to another conveniently in any weather condition and even in late or early hours. Being a freelance English teacher mobility is a big plus in my job because I can easily get to my classes even if they're far from each other and it can save me so much time rather than waiting for public transportation. But having a driver's licence changed my life in some unexpected ways, it also gave me a sense of freedom and independence. I was free to go to where ever I needed to be and I didn't need to depend on my husband to do that. I was also able to help other people, like when I helped bring a friend's sick baby to the emergency room. I was able to do volunteer work and I was even given an award for it. I was also able to bring my son to and from school when he had a broken ankle or when he and his friends had school trips and I was able to pick them up when they arrived late at night. And there were also times that I got depressed and driving is a way for me to clear my head and relieve some stress. There are many things that were better that sometimes I wished I had gotten my licence earlier. D) I hope my essay helped someone even just a little in a simple way.
